June 15, 2001CommerceNet Singapore (CNSG) CEO, Mr. Wong Jeh Shyan and Event Manager, Ms. Merlissa Phua visited Karachi and Lahore on the 18th May 2001 to 22nd May 2001. They met the French Trade Commissioner, Mr. Jean-Pierre Fillippi and the Deputy French Trade Commission, Mr. Francois Matraire in Karachi. Various issues were discussed including the feedback of the recent ITCN Asia 2001 in Karachi and the introduction of ITCN Asia 2002, which will be held in March next year. The French Embassy have given CNSG their support for the ITCN Asia 2002 initiatives in Karachi next year.
A “live” interview was conducted by Television Business Productions, representing CNBC Asia. During the interview, Mr. Wong and Ms. Phua stated the purpose of their trip and introduced the E-Global Conference 2001, which will be held on the 27th – 28th Oct 2001 in Lahore, Pakistan.
The CNSG team also met Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder, Head of E-Commerce, Ministry of Science and Technology. They discussed on the Pakistan Institute of E-Commerce (IOEC) initiatives in Karachi and also viewed the site office for IOEC in Karachi.
The CNSG team arrived in Lahore on the 20th May 2001. Both Mr. Wong and Ms. Phua met Dr. Khursheed Nizam, Managing Director of US Publishers to discuss on issues pertaining to the E-Global Conference 2001.
The Pearl-Continental Hotel in Lahore was selected as the official hotel and caterer for the E-Global Conference 2001. Upon negotiations with the General Manager, Mr. Jeremy Frankel, he has agreed that the hotel will offer special room rates, blockage of function rooms and provide hotel transfers for foreign delegates during the event.
The Jang Group of Newspapers, Karachi assured media support for both the E-Global Conference 2001 in Lahore and the ITCN Asia 2002 in Karachi.
Visit to the Governor’s House in Lahore
The CNSG team was invited to the Governor’s House in Lahore, whereby the Governor of Punjab has given his full support on the initiatives in Lahore to organise the E-Global Conference 2001. Diplomatic players (e.g. Military and Airport Protocol) have assured the team on their fullest support for this event. The team has also gained the support of the Punjab Tourism Board, who has agreed to organise a half-day City Tour for foreign delegates during the event.
On the whole, the trip has proven to be very fruitful, as very positive supports were gained from various IT parties in Pakistan on the initiatives in Lahore and Karachi, to organise the E-Global Conference 2001 in Lahore and ITCN Asia 2002 in Karachi.
