[ 18 -19 April 2002 ] Trust Infrastructure and Beyond – “Towards a Trusted Economy” Conference

CommerceNet Singapore (CNSG) and the National Trust Council organised the Trust Infrastructure and Beyond Conference which was a 2-day conference specially organised to support trust initiatives that promoted e-commerce. The conference was also inline with the recent trust initiatives in Singapore including content code, code of practice, data privacy protection and alternative dispute resolutions. The event was supported by iDA and sponsored by Keppel Digihub, EC Gateway and Sesami.com. About 80 participants attended the conference on both days which was held at the Tudor Ballroom at the Goodwood Park Hotel.

The primary objective of organising the conference was due to the fact that there was an increased need to reassess as well as re-engineer the relationship between businesses, companies and clients in a fast changing global trust landscape. Trust infrastructure and good business practices would allow organisations to create greater degree of transparency, raising clientele confidence in the way proprietory, market sensitive and personal information are treated without compromising on security and data privacy.

The 2-day conference brought together leading speakers from North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. It drew on public and private sector case studies giving delegates a unique insight into global best practices in trusted framework and beyond. The conference gave both the public and private sector professionals the need to stay in step with emerging trust, management, technology and policy issues; integrating and implementing trusted framework that meets the challenge of emerging good business practices and technologies.

Dr Kaizad Heerjee Assistant Chief Executive, Online Development, iDA Singapore welcomed participants and gave the keynote address. Assoc Prof (Dr) Toh See Kiat, Chairman of CommerceNet Singapore was the first speaker and he spoke on Data Privacy:The New Trade Barrier. Dr.Toh gave the audience an overview on data privacy and how it had become a trade barrier. He also discussed about trustmarks and sited examples of trustmarks that were available both locally and globally.

Mr.Johnny Moo, Vice Chairman, National Trust Council was the next speaker. He spoke on “Building Confidence in the Connected World”. He discussed the recent statistics on the B2B and B2C on the International E-Commerce trade and highlighted reasons for the lack of trust in e-commerce. Mr.Moo also discussed various strategies to create a trusted environment, promote best practices and engage govt by policy recommendations.

Mr.Robert Neely, Chairman of CommerceNet China went on to speak on Trust and Security:Lessons for future commerce. Mr.Neely spoke on issues related to the current trusted systems. He also spoke on the Commercial Security in Hong Kong and discussed future trust situations.

Mr.Chris Bates, Director, ePublicEye.com, USA was the next speaker and he discussed issues on “Consumer Feedback as a Rating Mechanism for Merchants”. Mr.Bates gave the participants an overview on ePublicEye.com and went on to discussed the various stages of Bridge Building with Consumers. He also spoke on the various methods of Improving the Quality of E-Commerce.

After lunch, Mr.Eric Trotter of VISA spoke on “Instilling Trust in eCommerce via Consumer Authentication and Data Protection. Mr.Mathivanan, COE of CrimsonLogic spoke on “PKI for a secure eBusiness Environment”. Mr. Badrul Hisham, CEO, MSC Trustgate, Malaysia spoke on “Trust and Security in Internet”.

“eTrust Mark Program and ADR in Korea” was the topic after the tea break. Mr.Kang Sung Kwon, KIEC, Korea gave participants an overview of KIEC’s mission, status and roles. He highlighted the various activities and methods used to build trust and infrastructure for e-Commerce in Korea. Mr.Eric Graf von der Recke, Certicom, Canada spoke on “Securing the Wireless World”. Mr.Vincent Chan, WebTrust Committee, Hong Kong spoke on “WebTrust: The Hong Kong Society of Accountant¹s Experience”. Mr.Chan was the last speaker on the first day.

On the second day, the first speaker, Mr.Dave Ng, CEO, Keppel Digihub spoke on Secured IT Outsourcing and Breaking the Cost Barrier. He discussed issues regarding the Top 10 Areas for IT Outsourcing, Decision Drivers and Success Factors. He highlighted the benefits of IT Outsourcing and later gave participants a case study of his organisation.

Prof. Robert Gay, CEO, ASP Centre spoke on “Beyond Policies: Key Initiatives Toward Singapore as a Trusted Service Providers Hub ­ Framework for Trust, Security and Accessibility”. Mr.Teo Moh Gin, CFO, Sesami Inc spoke on Trusted Marketplaces and the future of B2B Transactions.

After the morning break, Mr.Paul Mansz, VP of Product Architecture Kinek Technologies, Canada spoke on “Commerce Confidence Building: Federated Trust and Consumer Choice”. The next speaker Mr. Thomas Lim, Director, Gartner Group Advisory (S) Pte Ltd spoke on “Digital Rights Management and Content Security”. Mr. Chiew Min Phay, CIO, DataOne (Asia) spoke on “Security for Today’s Digital Economy”.

Participants were treated to a buffet lunch. Mr.Foo Jong Ai, CEO, Netrust Pte Ltd discussed Trust and Security for eBusiness issues. Mr.Edward Lodens, Manager, eCommerce Risk eVisa, Asia Pacific spoke on “Increasing Profitability by Managing eBusiness Risk”. The last speaker, Mr.Randall Choo, CEO, i-TransAct spoke on “Secure Transaction Processing and Merchant Acquiring”.
